Joseph Leander Loghry

Sticking with my Loghry line for the month of January, I'm next moving to Joseph Leander Loghry. Joseph was the surviving twin, born about 1777 to William Loughry and Nancy Purdy. His birth location is thought to be Wilkes Barre, Luzerne, Pennsylvania.

Joseph was an early settler of Brown's Crossing, Canisteo Township, where he bought, probably from Elisha Brown (the original proprietor), 400 acres of land for six shillings per acre. This land lay upon both sides of the river. He built and operated a saw mill, which probably stood on the south bank of the river, about 50 rods above the river bridge. History says in reference to this family: "Among the early settlers west of Cameron were Andrew and Joseph Loghry, who ran a saw mill on the river."

Joseph married Mary Santee, daughter of Valentine Santee and Margaret Funston, in 1800 in Luzerne, Pennsylvania. Together they had at least nine children. The 1820 U.S. census shows 15 individuals in the household. Some of these could have been spouses to the children.

  1. William Loghry (1801-1873)
  2. John Joseph Loghry (1803-1860)
  3. James Loghry (1805-1867)
  4. Nancy Loghry (between 1806 and 1810-1836)
  5. Lettie L. Loghry (1808-1893)
  6. Isaac Loghry (1809-1879)
  7. Charles L. Loghry (1811-1882)
  8. George William Loghry (1812-1886) [My 2nd great-grandfather)

They family up in the 1810 U.S. census in Canisteo, Steuben, New York as Joseph Lockrey, four free white males under 10 (William, John, James, and Isaac); one free white male 16 thru 25 (worker or other relative?); one free white male 26 thru 44 (Joseph); one free white person, female, under 10 (Lettie); one free white person, female, 26 thru 44 (Mary); five household members under 16; two household members over 25; and 8 total number of household members.
1810 U.S. census
The U.S. War of 1812 Service Records shows that Joseph Loughery served in the 2nd Regiment (Purviance's) in the Pennsylvania Militia. Was this Joseph Loghry? More research needs to be done on this.

By the 1820 U.S. census, the family now had 15 family members, three males under 10 (Charles, George, and?); one male 10 thru 15 (Isaac); one male 16 thru 18; three males 16 thru 25; one male 26 thru 44; one male 45 and over; two females under 10; one female 10 thru 15; one female 16 thru 25; one female 26 thru 44; one female 45 and over; five persons engaged in agriculture; seven persons under 16; and four over 25.

The family had started thinning down by the 1830 U.S. census when there were not only six persons living in the home.

Mary died on 15 March 18 30 in Cameron, Steuben, New York with burial in Brown's Crossing Cemetery.  Joseph died on 8 February 1831 in Canisteo, Steuben, New York with burial in Brown's Crossing Cemetery.
